Youth Engaged in STEM and Service (YESS) Research Brief

View Research Brief

Three Informing Change team members (Rachel Kramer, Evan Gattozzi, and Michael Arnold) have co-authored a research brief with staff at the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) titled “Youth Engaged in STEM and Service: A Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Summer Solar Camp Leveraging Community-Based Partnerships.”

Informing Change served as the evaluation partner for three summers (2021, 2022, and 2023) of Youth Engaged in Stem and Service (YESS), an NSF-funded hands-on summer program designed and implemented in collaboration by LHS with We Share Solar, the Alameda Boys & Girls Club, and Girls Inc. of the Island City. YESS was designed to support STEM identity development in female-identifying youth and youth of color in middle school.

The full brief is available on the LHS website and “shares highlights and reflections on what it took to create and offer an informal STEM educational experience that was informative, meaningful, and culturally relevant and sustaining.”
